Environmental Issues

Russia’s old communist government didn’t do much for the government. They gave out lots of dirty smoke and dumped poisons into rivers and lakes.

They also polluted the air, water, and land.

Now Russia is using nuclear energy plants. Even though they don’t pollute the air, they leave dangerous by-products.

Life Expectancy

Russia' old economy polluted the air making it less healthy. Russia’s air pollution also has caused rising cancer and falling life expectancy in the country.

Now most people are suffering from lung diseases. This shows that Russia’s population is becoming less healthy.

total population: 66.39 years
male: 59.91 years
female: 73.27 years (2004 est.)

          Russia's New Goverment

Russia is still learning on how to act in their new goverment.

Before, the Russian leaders could do whatever they wanted.

They also got to punish any people who would criticize their descions.

Now the leaders must learn to follow the new law and the Russian goverment officials have to adjust to accepting disagreements over the goverment policies.

                   Ethnic Groups

Russia has many different ethnic groups. Some groups want to form their own countries seperate from Russia.

One of these groups are the Chechens. They live in Chechnya close to the Caspian Sea in the southern part of Russia.

The Russian troops have fought the Chechen forces to still keep Chechnya a part of southern Russia.

Good Things About Present Russia

Russia has followed the United States in their government and economy style. Now they have adopted a free market economy and a democracy. People now in Russia can vote for their leader and put prices on products freely.

Russia is starting their first suburbs around cities. This idea may give people more space, but still be close to cities.
